Toad-Spo - May Quilt Color Palette Inspiration
The summer color palette brings together a pretty mix of pink, peach, brown, and yellow, capturing the essence of the season. The delicate pinks and peaches evoke a warm feeling, reminiscent of sun-kissed cheeks and the colors of a sunset. The addition of brown adds a natural and earthy touch, like the warm tones found in sandy beaches and tree trunks. This May quilt color palette embraces the warm hues of the color wheel and is making me want to plan a beach trip ASAP!

THE QUILT - JOPLIN
For May, we knew we needed to pick a fun, summery pattern to pair with this color palette for the unofficial start of summer month! What better pattern to use than Joplin! This big, medallion-style design allows you to play with bold colors and is full of different techniques making it the perfect skill builder pattern.
The fabrics we used are Art Gallery Fabrics Pure Solids in the colors Coconut Milk, English Toffee, Gingerbread, Apricot Crepe, Georgia Peach, Coral Reef, and Lemon Tart. All fabrics for the May quilt color palette in the top have been sponsored and provided by Art Gallery Fabrics!
Technique-wise, this pattern has just about a little bit of everything in it! From hourglass blocks to flying geese blocks to triangle-in-a-square blocks, you can experience so many unique piecing techniques throughout making the Joplin Quilt. The only thing missing is curved piecing! But leaving curves out of the design allows the impact of the points and straight line to shine!
LONGARM QUILTING
Our Toad-Spo sample longarm quilter is Ashley Perkins of Hen House Quilting! We are big fans of Ashley around here - not only because she’s a FANTASTIC quilter but also because she is a pretty cool chick too! ;) If you need a longarm quilter, we definitely recommend checking out Ashley for your quilting needs!
To break up all of the points and lines of the Joplin design, we decided to go with the Sunrise Skateland pantograph designed by Julie Hirt! This panto gives the quilt a groovy vibe, which definitely goes with the name of the pattern, and the shades in the May quilt color palette!
BACKING AND BINDING
The backing fabric we went with is the Handkerchief print in the color Melon from the Heirloom fabric collection by Alexia Abegg for Ruby Star Society. We were able to snag this fabric from our friend, Linli of Lamb and Loom Fabrics! We finished this Joplin Quilt off by binding it with the AGF Pure Solids fabric in the color Coral Reef. But our favorite little part of this quilt is that fun binding stitch!! We were able to stitch this binding on our Janome Memory Craft 6700p machine. You can check out the settings we used below if you have this machine and want to try your hand at it too.

MAKER SPOTLIGHT - Rachel
Our May Toad-Spo maker is Rachel Osterday of @woodsii.mama! Rachel is from Montana and takes a lot of inspiration from the nature around her. She has a hard time picking a favorite fabric line to quilt with because she loves them all! She tends to gravitate toward any fabric collection that has ochre, seafoam, or cedar colors in it though.
When Rachel isn’t homeschooling her kiddos, she is in her sewing room quilting and multitasking by listening to her favorite audiobook. This is what she will be doing when she makes her dream quilts - two special quilts for her littles to have to carry with them into adulthood. And sitting right next to her when she makes them? - two sweet old dogs and her kitties!
You all should follow along on Rachel’s quilting journey by following her on Instagram! It’s hard to believe she’s been quilting for only a year and is self-taught!
Quick fun facts about Rachel:
- Her favorite food is morel mushrooms
- The superpower she’d love to have is to be able to bend time
- She’s a woman of many hobbies - knitting, spinning, weaving, botanical dying, gardening, sewing clothes and of course quilting!
- She's a big fan of Eivør
