Garden Glow - The Sewcialite FQ Bundle One

Posted by Olivia Alaniz on

The Garden Glow Quilt is finally available! You can grab the pattern here!

The Garden Glow design is a spin-off design inspired by one of my best-selling and personal favorite patterns, the Sky Cabin Quilt. I wanted to push my creativity further by creating a block-based design that is fat-quarter friendly, drawing inspiration from my adoration for tile floors and intricate mosaics.

I’m not going to lie - I had a hard time wrapping my head around the fat quarter friendly concept throughout the writing process. I found myself thinking in terms of “yardage” and would have to remind myself that the piecing instructions needed to be written in a way that wasn’t referring to the fabrics as “Color 1.” I went back and forth on how to properly name each of the fabric pieces so that it would be user friendly and easy to comprehend.

For this quilt sample, my amazing tester, Geri, wanted to make the fat quarter version and jumped at the opportunity to use the Art Gallery Fabrics Sewcialite Fat Quarter Bundle called Wildflower Hill curated by Christina West of Kindred Quilt Co. I don’t blame her - this bundle has the brightest and happiest color palette which truly matches Christina's personality!

We paired the AGF Sewcialite bundle with this rich Golden Bronze Pure Solid from Art Gallery Fabrics and an accent color of Lavender Water. I was feeling really inspired by the lavender purples in the bundle if you couldn’t tell. We even used a lavender color for the backing fabric too! This print is called Natural Symphony from the LullaBee Art Gallery Fabric collection designed by Patty Basemi.

The Sewing

The fun part about the fat quarter version of Garden Glow is mixing and matching your fabrics! I’m all for playing around with fabrics and pairing them together until they are just right. Wildflower Hill has a great mix of colors and prints making it really easy to plan your pairings. There isn’t a “wrong” combination when using this bundle!

These blocks turned out to be some of my favorites so far, and I’m a little jealous I wasn’t the one who got to make them! The Golden Bronze stars in between the colorful mosaic tiles makes me so happy. I definitely will need to recreate this quilt for myself!

The Quilting

Geri quilted this up on her Janome 1600 P and Grace Company Frame combo using long, wavy organic lines. I love the subtle movement this quilting creates in the quilt. The quilting really lets the colors and piecing shine without competing with each other! This quilting is a great option for any quilt since it can easily be done with your walking foot! Just guide your quilt through doing long side-to-side movements as you go.
